Overview

Magnet Miner is a game I created in under 72 hours for the Score Space game jam. This was a solo project, with the sole exception of the music. I designed and developed the game from scratch using only free assets and software. The Game Jam's theme was 'Magnetic'.

Tools used

  • Game Engine - Unreal Engine 5

  • Character Mesh - Mixamo

  • Character Animation - Mixamo

  • Assets - Quixel Bridge

  • Sound Effects - BFXR

  • Music - Music written and performed by William Roman

Enviroment Design

I wanted the player to feel like they were inside a mine trying to avoid the bombs that were inexplicably exploding around them. I used assets from the Quixel Bridge to fill my level with realistic objects such as mine carts, tracks, and pickaxes. Because of material stretching, I had to adjust the tilling on the materials brought in from Quixel. I also adjusted the lighting the makes the level dark without impeding visibility.

Blueprint Scripting

Unreal Engine Blueprints

I used Unreal Engine 5's blueprint scripting to script interactions between actors in my game. I developed a level system to make the game progressively harder the longer the player played, as well as rewarded them accordingly with more points. I also scripted basic animations using timelines and Lerp nodes. I created bomb and screw spawners that were collected at runtime and put into arrays, allowing for full control over how the level played with the possibility of scaling the project up or down without having to change much of the scripting.

Sound Design

BFXR

BFXR is a free software that allowed me to mix and match sounds for all of the effects the players hears in game. I created sounds for picking up the screws, bomb explosions, warning sounds, etc. The music was written and composed by my brother, William Roman. He's currently studying Music at UC Berkley.
